THE New High School proposes significant changes for the year 2025, and if you have children in elementary school, you should pay attention to them.

The main changes are to the workloads, which are now defined according to the type of training: basic, formative, professional and technological.

Furthermore, the time young people spend at school will have to be longer, since the basic workload will be 3,000 hours distributed over the 3 years of training.

Below we will explain how this will work, including implementation rules and main changes. Keep reading to find out more!

New High School: understand the proposal

You may have already heard about the New High School on the main social media, after all, the main changes will start to be implemented from 2025, which is already knocking on the door.

The New High School is the result of the change in Law No. 9,394/1996 and partial revocation of Law No. 13,415/17, which define the National Secondary Education Policy.

These changes resulted in changes regarding the workload of basic training and the secondary school curriculum.

As a result, the workload, which was previously at least 1,800 hours distributed over 3 years, will now be at least 3,000 hours.

Furthermore, the content covered throughout the years of study will be distributed into 3 training groups: basic, formative and professional and technological.

Changes in workload with the New High School

As explained previously, one of the main changes in the New High School is related to the workload.

This is because, previously, the law provided for a workload of at least 1,800 hours distributed over the 3 years of training, which totals around 600 hours per year and approximately 3 hours per day, considering 200 school days per year.

With the changes in the law, this minimum workload becomes 3 thousand hours, which would result in 1 thousand hours per year, and approximately 5 hours per day, considering 200 school days per year.

It is important to understand that when we talk about minimum workload we are referring to the period of attendance required for the student to be approved.

Furthermore, this change requires changes to school opening hours and the activities and curriculum applied.

Types of training: basic, formative and professional and technological

Now that you understand that the New High School foresees a significant increase in the workload, we can talk about the changes in the curriculum.

The new model provides for 3 main types of training: basic, formative and professional and technological.

Basic Training:

Basic training includes the application of the following curriculum:

Thus, of the minimum 3,000 hours required in the New Secondary Education, at least 2,400 must be allocated to basic training.

Formative:

The training itineraries offer students the possibility of choosing specific subjects in which they wish to delve deeper, such as:

The new guidelines provide that around 600 hours of secondary education must be dedicated to this type of training.

Professional and technological:

Professional and technological training offers students the possibility of completing a professional course during high school, which helps them in their journey into the job market.

In this case, this offer guarantees technical and professional training, organized based on the national curricular guidelines for professional and technological education (EPT), and depends on the availability of the institution and region.

If the student decides to follow this type of training, the minimum workload is 900 hours for the New Secondary Education, and this training replaces the training itineraries.

It is worth mentioning that in the case of technical and professional training, there is a reduction in the basic training workload to 2,100 hours, in order to total 3,000 total hours.

What changes for language study?

In the New High School, English remains mandatory within the school curriculum.

However, if there is availability of professionals and infrastructure, the Spanish language may be used, as long as English is not excluded.

Does the New High School provide for distance learning?

When the New High School was announced, a lot of misleading information started circulating in the media, and one of them said that the new model would offer distance learning.

It is worth mentioning that this information is not true, since the text of the law defines that the application of High School must be in person.

However, in exceptional cases, technology may be used, especially in cases of public calamity or for specific activities.

Will there be night classes?

The provision of night classes is provided for in the New High School, with a requirement that at least one educational institution in the state provide these hours, when there is demand.

So, the rule remains basically the same as before, as supply depends on local demand.

And what about Full-Time Education?

Full-time education basically follows the same rules as regular education, but with the difference that it can use proven extracurricular experiences and activities to “deduct” part of the 3,000-hour workload.

In this case, in the New High School the following are accepted:

These activities are counted as class hours, which allows students to participate in Internship and Young Apprentice programs.

Finally, it is worth mentioning that there is a time limit for these activities, so make an appointment beforehand so that this does not interfere with mandatory basic training.

How will the New High School be implemented?

The start of the implementation of the New High School will be in:

To this end, schools will receive resources and guidance from the Ministry of Education for changes to the workload and curriculum.

Finally, now that we have clarified all the points of change in the New High School, it is easier to prepare for the next years of basic education.
